Money Makes Them Unmarried

Being single is the new trend around town these days. We happen to meet single women more frequently now than we did till about a decade ago. Though the larger perspective about single women hasn’t changed at that pace, we do see a sea change in the way society looks at them. There is of course more acceptability. And when I say single, I mean women who were never ever married.
MoneyQuin met Celena Anand, a 30-something-year-old banker in Mumbai. She’s single by choice, earns well, stays in a rented accommodation, owns a car through loan and has a good time on weekends. “Work never lets me feel lonely through week days and on weekends I usually have friends visiting or I go out with them. We mostly go out of city on treks, drives etc.” she says.
Well, she’s happy but not so much her folks. They keep suggesting eligible grooms for their daughter. Celena says she met a couple of them but never clicked. She said, the guys she met were professionally well-settled. They would talk about their work and office and when they asked her, she turned out to be better settled and hence they never came back. It had a lot to do with salary packages too.
But there was the other extreme too. She met a guy a once suggested by her cousin. He was settled in Canada working with a bank at a junior level. His explanation for his negligible growth was that he had a hotel management degree and had to take this bank job as he couldn’t retain his first job as a chef which deterred him from going back to the hotel industry forever.
Anyway, a couple of conversations later, the guy told Celena that he’s unhappy with his job and is looking for a change. A little later it turned out this was the case with him everywhere. He had left his previous job with an IT company also in a huff.
Then to Celena’s shock, he tells her that he was looking for a rich wife so that his worries about handling difficult bosses are sorted forever. “I have no inhibitions about doing the house hold chores and babysitting,” he told her. This immediately put off Celena and she wished him Good Luck!
This is a true story. This is happening. Gone are those days when women stayed single only if they were suffering from some chronic diseases or had had a bad relationship. It’s not disease or bad affairs that are leading to increasing number of single women in our society it’s the women’s flourishing financial and professional status. No wonder we are bumping into more adult single women who are living happily ever before and after.
We definitely need more guys who have a super cool metabolism to digest their women’s success above their own and their women’s fattening salary packages over their own slimmer deals. But of course we don’t need desperate effeminates who look forward to a role reversal by marrying rich women.
Even though our society still finds it difficult to accept singledom especially of women, we are better than what we were a few years back. And with the species swelling at a fast pace, that’ll just pass of as another marital status in a world of billions.
